Soccer - Poyet goes on the Sunderland offensive
Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has suggested he may have to find a way to buy the club out of a relegation scrap by bringing in a new striker in the January transfer window. Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher have scored four Premier League goals each at the top of the club's goalscoring charts but Poyet is concerned a lack of a threat in attack could cost the Wearsiders. The Wearsiders are just four points above third-from-bottom Crystal Palace ahead of a New Year's Day trip to take on champions Manchester City and the Uruguayan fears his players are not finding the net enough. Only Aston Villa (11) and Burnley (14) have scored fewer goals than Sunderland, while Connor Wickham has only found the net twice and USA striker Jozy Altidore has yet to register this season. Poyet said he was aware of the problem and promised he will look to beef up his attacking options as soon as the New Year transfer market is up and running. "The easiest way to sort out a few problems in front of goal is to go and buy," he told reporters. "Now the right price, the right player who scores goals coming here and doing it straight away - everybody is looking for the same, so it's a competition. There are not many, but we will try." Sunderland are currently priced 11/2 to be relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.
Soccer - Bruce backs away from Newcastle talk
Hull City manager Steve Bruce has confirmed he will not be returning to his native north-east to replace the outgoing Alan Pardew at Newcastle United. Pardew is expected to take up the reins at his old club Crystal Palace after the two clubs agreed a compensation package for the 53-year-old and St James' Park officials must now begin the search for a replacement. Corbridge-born Bruce is a boyhood Newcastle supporter but never played for the Tyneside club during a trophy-laden career and distanced himself from reports of becoming Pardew's successor. "People know that I am from Newcastle, I was a Newcastle supporter as a boy and it has been regurgitated since I was a 22-year-old playing for Norwich and Gillingham," he told reporters. "For that obvious reason every time I am linked with them. It's very flattering as I'm a Geordie but that's it." Hull are on the same number of points as Burnley and Crystal Palace in the drop-zone and Bruce said he would not be walking away from a relegation scrap. He said: "I have a job to do here and it would be wrong for me to think of anything else other than get this club out of the position we are in and that's all I am focused on." Hull City host Everton at the KC Stadium on New Year's Day and are currently priced 6/4 to be relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.
